How to get back into art ?

Getting back into art,

Wanting to get back into art is overwhelming, with an unlimited number of resources and advice online. Where do I even start?

Much like you, I have not drawn or painted in years and the idea of starting again is scary, old insecurities and the idea that I cannot make something as skillful as I did last time is a prevalent feeling. First ask yourself, what is keeping you back, what stops you from starting?

To get back to where it all began, we must put these notions to rest.

Yes you will be rusty. Yes, getting skilled in art is time-consuming and that is ok. Once we accept that our work will not be Instagram worthy right away, it allows us to clear our slate. Remember why you want to get back into art, not for the approval of others, but for your inner peace.

Before we start a simple point, I must emphasize, stay off social networks.

Social media is a fantastic place to see what artists are doing, which can provide innovative ideas or help you learn new techniques. However, the idea that you need social media for inspiration is an excuse to put off drawing. Inevitably you will see professional work and start to become self-conscious. It is a cycle and you need to pause it.

For now, put the phone away, just focus on what is in front of you.

What do I need to start drawing?

At our most basic level all we’ll need is paper and pencil, it’s important at this time to keep it simple. You can do so much with just the essentials, and that is the beauty of art.

Beginner art exercises.

Time to put practice on paper, pick one or multiple of the following exercises,

Simple Shape Sketches,

Pick one object from your immediate vicinity, then set a timer for 5-minutes, draw it using simple shapes (Circles, Squares, triangles, etc.). This allows you to reacquaint yourself with the concept of shape.

5-minute Gesture Drawing,

Hold your pencil like a paintbrush. Pick an object around you or use a reference photo you have on hand. Use your upper shoulder to make large gestural lines, set a 5-minute timer, and start drawing. Do not worry about perfection if the idea is there.

Prompt Doodle

If you want something a little less technical, load a prompt generator. Generate a prompt and draw the prompt under a 5-minute timer. This allows for more creative introductions to art.

How did your art turn out? If it is not perfect, awkward, flat, and distended, that is good. Leave it be this is not about learning to be good; it is about being comfortable with the results. Accepting awkward art is the first step at getting back because it allows us to lower the barrier as much as possible.

Congratulations you started drawing again, your first work back will not be your best, but it proves that you can still draw and that you have started again – and that is what matters.
